Description

My parents, Charles Francis Faessler and Margaret Mary Sherman were born and raised in Switzerland. Dad grew up in the capital city, Bern, and Mother in Luzern. As a young man, Dad worked on a farm and later in an iron factory in Luzern, where he met my mother. They were married on July 10, 1922. They planned to emigrate to Canada as Dad’s younger brother Ernie had done two years earlier. Ernie had been working in Canada for the owner of a large farm who moved to Saskatchewan from Switzerland. The farmer talked Ernie and another young man into coming to Canada to work on the farm. The wages he offered seemed like a lot in Swiss francs. However, the cost of goods in Canada was much higher so the wages didn’t go as far as it seemed they would at the time.
