Description
This book, Northwest Quarter, is a historical novel based on true events about our family. The story begins at the birth place of our parents near the village of Marjampol, Poland. At that time in history Poland was occupied by the Austria – Hungary Empire. After the First World War, Poland once again became a country in its own right. However, borders shifted and Marjampol is now in Lithuania. The main character in this story is Michal Skretka. As a young man of seventeen, he often watched the cavalry regiments pass thru town. He admired their bay horses and marveled at those proud soldiers with their high leather boots, highly polished saddles, and khaki uniforms. It was 1914 and the First World War was raging in Europe. Michal wanted to join the cavalry but he was one year short of the required entrance age. He had to find a way he thought as the smart looking soldiers passed from view.
