Rocky Mountain Fort, Saint Johns, Rocky Mountain Portage, Fort d’Epinette, Fort des Pinnettes, Fort George, a bewildering array of names given to the early fur trade posts located on the Upper Peace River. It was this multitude of choices that resulted in the confusion of the original location of the NorthWest Company’s trading post of Saint Johns that has persisted to the present day. What began as a casual inquiry led to a twenty five year search to find the original documents, letters and diaries of people like Alexander Mackenzie, Archibald McDonald, Governor George Simpson, Hugh Faries, Francis Herron, Samuel Black, Daniel Harmon and others; people who were actually in the Upper Peace River country between 1793 and 1825.
