Description
The Ferry Roaders, as we came to be known, were a group of young boys in their early and late teens living, playing, working and just experiencing life during the Dirty Thirties and World War II in St. James Manitoba. The Dirty Thirties began after the stock market crash of 1929 and that’s a piece of history I’m sure you are really interested in. If you haven’t heard enough about it through books, movies, and TV series, then you must have heard your grandparents and parents telling you all about it in graphic detail. Yes, there were thousands of men riding the rods looking for work. Yes, there were many thousands of families living in desperate conditions. But my story is about pre-teen and teenage boys just trying to be the same as all the children who came before them, learning to play and playing to learn. We were finding out which is the right way and which is the wrong way from our peers, our siblings, and our elders.
