In 1986 I circumnavigated Vancouver Island stopping at Haida Gwai, which I fell in love with. I made another trip there a few years later which was equally fascinating. Now it seems that I am back full circle once more with a new boat, Rio Nimpkish (meaning Big Fish). It is a 12-metre Corbin; an extremely well built boat, which I chose because it was designed for Open Ocean sailing. Around that time I met my partner Marcia, an avid runner and traveller. She was changing jobs and as we got along well I suggested that she join me in a short “shakedown” trip to Alaska prior to my leaving Victoria for the South and beyond. I would single-hand the northern journey and she would join me whenever she could arrange the time.
