The John Oliver (High School) Historical Society was formed in 1999 with the purpose of producing a book on the history of John Oliver High School, formerly South Vancouver High School. The school was the largest high school in Western Canada for several decades and the largest high school in Canada during the mid–1950s. The school excelled in academics, athletics, music, drama, and art. South Vancouver was a separate municipality until January 1, 1929 when it amalgamated with the City of Vancouver. At the time of amalgamation the Municipality had the third largest population in the Province with the third largest school district. This history brings alive the memories of the people who built South Vancouver from its beginnings in the early 1860s
